Drawers or cargo systems? Which solution should you choose for base cabinets?

A modern kitchen should be not only aesthetically pleasing but, above all, functional. That is why, when designing kitchen cabinetry, it is worth considering which solution will work better in base cabinets – drawers or pull-out cargo systems?
In practice, both solutions often complement each other perfectly. Each has its own advantages, and the best choice depends primarily on what you intend to store and your everyday habits. Well-designed cabinetry combines the benefits of both drawers and cargo systems, creating a functional and comfortable space for daily use.
When should you choose drawers?
Drawers have been extremely popular for years thanks to their ease of use. With full-extension runners, all stored items are immediately visible and easily accessible. Deeper drawers are perfect for storing small kitchen appliances, pots, pans, and tableware. Shallower drawers are ideal for cutlery, kitchen accessories, spices, as well as coffee and specialty tea supplies.
Depending on the kitchen style and individual preferences, several drawer systems are available. The AMIX range includes both Elite Box and System Box drawer systems. Elite Box is a modern solution with an elegant appearance and high functionality, available in four side heights and eight runner lengths. System Box, on the other hand, is a reliable and cost-effective solution that performs exceptionally well even in heavily used kitchens. Both systems ensure smooth operation and convenient access to stored items. They are available in two versions: front drawers and inner drawers, which can be concealed behind a single cabinet front, making it much easier to achieve a clean, minimalist kitchen design.
When should you choose cargo systems?
Cargo systems are an excellent alternative to drawers, allowing you to make the most of the available cabinet space. They are particularly suitable for storing taller items such as bottles, jars, spices, food supplies, and cleaning products. Among the most popular solutions are the AMIX Cargo Mini systems designed for cabinets 150 to 300 mm wide, as well as the Cargo Midi systems intended for taller cabinets. Thanks to the pull-out baskets, the entire cabinet contents are within easy reach without the need to move other items around.
But that's not all. Cargo systems also make it possible to utilize spaces that would otherwise remain unused. This includes narrow gaps of just a few centimeters between standard cabinets, which are common when using modular kitchen furniture. AMIX Cargo Mini and Side Cargo systems can be installed in cabinets as narrow as 150, 200, and 250 mm. They provide the perfect storage solution for spices, bottles, jars, and other small kitchen essentials, ensuring that every inch of the kitchen contributes to better organization and greater convenience.
A separate category is corner cargo systems designed specifically for corner cabinets. They are an absolute must-have for anyone looking to make the most of typically spacious yet difficult-to-access corner units. The Corner Magic system is available in two versions: MPTJ017E, in which both two-tier baskets slide completely out of the cabinet, and MPTJ017G with a front-mounted mechanism, where only one two-tier basket slides out. These systems are designed for cabinets measuring 800, 900, 1000, and 1200 mm wide, as well as selected models for 900 and 1000 mm cabinets. They make everyday kitchen tasks significantly more convenient.
Drawers or cargo systems?
In practice, it is difficult to give a definitive answer to the question: "Drawers or cargo systems?" Drawers are ideal for storing numerous smaller items and provide convenient top access to everything inside. Cargo systems, in turn, are perfect for organizing taller products and making efficient use of narrow spaces that often remain unused in traditional cabinetry. For this reason, these solutions should not be viewed as competing alternatives but rather as complementary systems that work best together in a well-designed kitchen.
